The occurrence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has been steadily on the rise for the past few years. It’s now more important than ever for women to get their annual sexual health screenings.
Even during pregnancy, it’s important to get tested regularly for STIs. We’ve gathered the highlights of what you should know about STIs during pregnancy below and where you can find local and affordable testing.
Should I Get Tested For STIs During My Pregnancy?
Yes. Unfortunately, pregnancy does not provide women protection from STIs. Some STIs, even those that cause no symptoms, can harm a woman’s reproductive tract and even their pregnancy.
Symptoms to Watch For
Many STIs can occur without presenting any symptoms, especially in the first week or two after contracting the disease. If symptoms do arise, women may notice the following physical signs.
Chlamydia
Chlamydia is one of the most prevalent and easily transmitted STIs. Symptoms for chlamydia include abnormal vaginal discharge and a burning sensation while peeing.
Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is caused by bacteria in the genital tract. Symptoms typically appear 10 days after being exposed to the germ and include:
- Thick, cloudy or bloody discharge from the penis or vagina.
- Pain or burning sensation when urinating.
- Pain in the pelvis or stomach area.
Genital Herpes
Genital herpes is a virus that spreads easily through mucous membranes. Most people with genital herpes don’t experience any symptoms at all and are not aware they have the infection.
If symptoms of genital herpes occur they can include: small red bumps, open ulcers, pain or itching around the genital area, pressure in the stomach and vaginal discharge.
Can An STI Harm Me or My Pregnancy?
STIs can cause harm to a woman’s reproductive tract if left untreated. Chlamydia can cause an ectopic pregnancy which can create life-threatening blood loss for the mother.
Gonorrhea can be passed from a woman to her pregnancy during birth if not properly managed.
Complications for a pregnancy affected with an untreated STI may include:
- Low birth weight (less than 5 pounds)
- Eye infection
- Pneumonia
- Brain damage
- Blindness
- Deafness
- Meningitis
The good news is almost all STIs can be managed with proper treatment and medication.
