How to Prepare Physically for an Ultrasound

An obstetrical ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image of the inside of your body. It checks the health and development of your pregnancy.

The technician applies a small amount of gel to your abdomen and gently moves a handheld device called a transducer across your skin. The gel helps transmit sound waves more efficiently.

The transducer sends sound waves into your body, which bounce back. The echoes of those sound waves create black-and-white dots on a computer screen, which form an image of your pregnancy.

Preparing Yourself Mentally

Feeling anxious, excited, or nervous before your first ultrasound is common. Preparing yourself mentally can help you feel more at ease and in control.

Don’t let fear of the unknown keep you from getting this vital scan. There are no harmful side effects for you or the pregnancy from an ultrasound. Consider the following:

  • Acknowledge your emotions. It’s okay to be nervous or anxious. We understand.
  • Talk with the technician. Although the technician communicates each step clearly, it’s helpful to ask questions and let them know if you’re struggling.
  • Invite a support person. You are more than welcome to invite your partner, a friend, or a family member for emotional support.
  • Give yourself time to process the results. We understand that ultrasound results can evoke a range of emotions.
  • Know that you are not alone. We’re here to support you no matter what you choose to do. Let us know how we can help you.
