How many ultrasounds are recommended during pregnancy?

Sonograms are the pictures taken by a fetal ultrasound. If you are currently pregnant, you might be wondering what an ultrasound is and how many are needed during a pregnancy.

Below, you’ll find the answers to both those questions and more!

What Is An Ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a diagnostic tool used at healthcare facilities to generate images within the uterus and surrounding areas.

These images allow doctors to confirm how far along you are, pregnancy location (if it’s located within the uterus), and viability (if there’s a heartbeat and the pregnancy is progressing).

How Is An Ultrasound Performed?

Two different types of ultrasounds are currently available: abdominal ultrasound and transvaginal ultrasound.

Both types are performed by a sonographer who is specially trained at viewing and understanding the images produced.

Abdominal Ultrasounds

During an abdominal ultrasound, the sonographer will apply a warm gel on your stomach and use a short wand to take pictures inside your body.

Transvaginal Ultrasounds

A transvaginal ultrasound uses a longer, thinner wand that is inserted into the vagina to capture images of the uterus. The transvaginal ultrasound is typically used very early in pregnancy.

How Many Ultrasounds Are Necessary During Pregnancy?

The exact number of ultrasounds needed during a pregnancy may vary depending on a woman’s age and medical history. But according to the Cleveland Clinic, most women will have two ultrasounds during their pregnancy.
