Before deciding whether abortion is right for you, you may want to have more details about your pregnancy. A pregnancy test can detect hCG, the hormone produced when a fertilized egg implants.

A limited ultrasound can provide additional details, including how many weeks along the pregnancy is, where the pregnancy is developing, and whether cardiac activity is detected.

This can also help identify findings that may require further medical evaluation. For example, an ectopic pregnancy develops outside the main cavity of the uterus and can become life-threatening if the ectopic pregnancy causes the fallopian tube to rupture.

Knowing how far along the pregnancy is can also be important when considering the abortion drug. The FDA has approved the abortion pill through 10 weeks of gestation, or 70 days from the first day of your last menstrual period. Mifepristone is not approved for an ectopic pregnancy.
